The Mentalist 5.12 "Little Red Corvette" Review

It's Actionman Patrick and Bionic Woman Lisbon to the rescue...

This ep of The Mentalist was different, it was more like how do we catch Volker?  A bit like Columbo in that we knew who did it but the question was how was Lisbon (Robin Tunney) going to prove it?  As mentioned last ep she would get help from Patrick (Simon Baker) and resort to using Patrick's methods which is why she asked for his help.  So it was strange when he asked if she was going alone to see Volker (Henry Ian Cusick)and she didn't want him to come.  But at least we saw Patty get his teeth into Volker, first by meeting him at the school.  Was about to say when he told Volker he's very believable when reading the story to the children, he was a bit like Patrick himself in that respect.  Especially since Patty is adept in doing the same with people when he tells them what they're thinking and reels them in.

He did this twice and second time was when Volker made another impromptu visit to Lisbon's office in search for her.  You mean to say he didn't see her standing at the back.  Lisbon wants Cho (Tim Kang) to escort him out and before he leaves Patrick tells him how intimidated Volker really is.  He's afraid and thinks they don't know it, but Patrick can read him like the squirming worm that he is.

Two Months Earlier  This began with a boy, Marvin (Emjay Anthony) playing with his remote controlled little red Corvette (hence the title) in a condemned building when Volker arrives with Milk (Matt Baker) and another man, Clyde (Steven Bauer) to finish off one of the witnesses from the Amazon energies case.  Milk strangles him with a wire and then Clyde helps him move the DB.  With Volker watching on hand, always around but never getting his hands dirty.  As they're about to leave, the car makes a noise and Marvin is discovered.  Milk leaving Clyde to finish off the witness, but of course he wouldn't.

Present Day  So when Lisbon et all arrive at the CS they ID the decomposed DB as Horatio Jones (Adam Tsekhman) and Patrick stumbles upon the car, wondering what it would be doing there.  Lisbon doesn't seem interested in the car since she thinks it was just left there but Patrick and his paternal instincts makes him pursue the issue further.  He gets Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) to look up places where there are children and narrows down the closest one to the warehouse.  Leading to Marvin Pettigrew.  His mother, Sharon (Jennifer Sommerfield) says he's been missing and thinks he's dead, but Patrick doesn't know.  Nice to see him handle the situation with sympathy, as he would.

Lisbon knows Jones since he was on the witness list against Volker but disappeared when he was to testify, thus she needs to get the deposition but it's closed.  Patrick suggests she use blackmail on DDA Ardilles (David Norona) but she needs leverage to do this.  Thus Patrick suggests who knows everything that goes on at the CBI.  That was a clue if ever there was one as to who would leak info to Volker.  So Lisbon turns to Brenda (Rebecca Wisocky) but can't tell him why she needs some sort of info to use on Ardilles.  But Lisbon will owe her one.  She suggests mentioning the Furland case.  Which she does and gets him to give up the deposition.  Wonder if there'll be any reference e to that further down the track and why Ardilles was so nervous at the mere mention of the name.

On the deposition list they find the name of Annabelle (Nicola LaLiberte) who met with Jones in Brazil and they shared drinks.  Cho questions her on whether she heard of any mass killings there but she didn't.  NOW anyone can tell Volker had gotten to her and I wasn't sure if Lisbon sussed that out when she listened on the other side of the glass.  Cos she heads back to Volker telling him she didn't blab and she's leaving the country.  Volker the sleaze has taken a shine to her, just like he did with Lisbon and kisses her on the cheek.    She's a liability and he doesn't like liabilities so it's a surprise he let her go.

Patrick turns up at the children's school where Volker reads for them and notices two men who watch them when Patrick introduces himself, especially when Patrick grabs Volker's arm.  Cue Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) taking photos of Clyde.  DNA from the CS turns up belonging to Milk and there's also a hair, which they didn't identify.  Thought they would have said that belonged to Clyde when they bring him in and he's not asking for a lawyer since innocent men don't need one, but rather cos Volker will hear.  Anyway that was moot point since Volker would know anyway.  Patrick questions him and he finally says he wouldn't kill a child but he won't tell them anything.  Which again defeated the purpose.

Lisbon goes to Jones's Energy company to talk to Jones's boss but spies the camera on the wall and thinks Volker will get there before them as he's one step ahead, which he did, he must have seen them on the camera.  Lisbon asks Judge Davis (Amy Aquino) for a warrant for their documents but she doesn't have sufficient probable cause.  She then leaves and calls Patrick, who once again tells her that she knows what he would do.  Obviously, lie a little, embellish should I say.  She bursts in saying they have a witness who gave them probable cause to enter the building.  When they arrive it's deserted and Lisbon displays her anger by throwing a vase against the wall.  That was different to see cos she's usually so calm and collected, but Volker just riles her up.

Clyde is dropped off so Volker doesn't know he's been at the CBI but Volker calls him and tells him he's a dead man.  Thus Clyde steps in front of a bus.  They check out all leads as to who Clyde would trust enough to leave the boy with, and Cho says someone desperate for a child.  They find one woman on their list and Volker arrives at the apartment before them.  Had a funny feeling they may have gotten there already and would be lying in wait, but alas that'd spoil all the excitement of Lisbon's takedown of Volker.  He finds a letter on the fridge about a zoo visit and Rigsby also finds this when they finally arrive there.  That was Rigsby's paternal instincts in play there, re Ben.

Great to see Patty getting some running in this episode and they hear Marvin screaming for help, but no one else bothered helping him.  Volker pulls his gun on Lisbon but she gets a shot in and then gets to punch him too.  Bet she was just aching to do that.  Patrick takes Marvin home and it was good to see the smile on his face at parent and child being reunited and that he had helped in bringing him home.

So the leak, well it was none other than Brenda, so she was under suspicion for being a Red John cohort, but why did she help Volker and what was he holding over her?  But Brenda shame on you when she handed over Marvin's photo knowing full well she sentenced him to death.  What would drive her to this, save her own life, but how did she get into Volker's clutches to begin with.  What can I say, come on red John finish her off.  Seems in the end Volker had to get his hands dirty cos no one would kill a child, as we know certain bad guys have a few scruples when it comes to children.  AT least he's dealt with now, hopefully.  As said the episode before last, Lisbon has exhausted every legal avenue open to her so she had to resort to Patrick's methods to get her man, it was a last resort.  But Lisbon's always been the one to play by the rules and hopefully this was just a momentary aberration for her.

Cho and Rigsby's scene where Rigsby takes a sip of Cho's week old soda and he didn't tell him.  Thought Cho was more of a tidy person and wouldn't have left that in there.  Still a fun scene.  Van Pelt still behind the desk but hopefully not for long, oops keep using hopefully here a lot.  Patrick says Marvin's been missing 63 days when talking with Van Pelt but then it's said he's been missing 61 days.

Also when we get Present Day Patrick mentions it's been a week since Milk was killed thus she couldn't get anything from him.  So that means last eps's case came in between in terms of the timeline.  Patrick being supportive of Lisbon whilst still looking for Marvin and getting time on the sofa too, ha.
Some great dialogue too between Patrick and Volker when he tells him he wanted to meet him when he has the chance.
Volker: "Are you going somewhere?"
Patrick: "No, but you are.  After your arrest, things are bound to get a little hectic and I probably wanted to have a chance to introduce myself and here I am."  SO perceptive Patty, sure enough he was arrested.  Actually it was more like Patty was preening his feathers to say he's the man in Lisbon's life!  One nitpick, Volker with his billions, hiring anyone he wants to, and yet he panicked over a little boy who could ID him at the scene.  Losing his cool, abducting Marvin in public and what, he'd have shot him in public too, for someone who always hid in the shadows, that was out of character for him.

Patrick: "You're afraid of us...you want us to think you're gloating, but you're not, you're afraid....I can see right through you.  We were close searching your offices like that...you want us to think that you're in control, that you're untouchable, but you're not.  You're afraid of us and you should be."  Did this have Volker panicking?  Patrick got under his skin just like Volker did with Lisbon.

Good moment when Patrick tells Lisbon Volker would gave her his DNA voluntarily if she asked, that's how cocky Volker is.  Let's not have Volker turning out to be in league with red John cos that'd be too weird and somewhat unbelievable.
