CSI 13.11 "Dead Air" Review

                                    CSI
The CSIs investigate the murder of a prominent news anchor, Theresa Shea (Danielle Bisutti) whilst the lights went out in the studio.  There are many suspects as she wasn't liked and she was found to have been stabbed in the base of the neck, something which David (David Berman) describes to Sara (Jorga Fox) as 'pithing' which sounded funny especially if you have a lisp.  Thus they said it a few times.  This is what they used to do to frogs in biology and the girls hated doing it, so he had to.  She was found at her desk.  DB (Ted Danson) sums up the investigation using TV speak" If it bleeds, it leads."  An ep of the Mentalist was also entitled this, where they investigated the murder of a reporter and Patrick (Simon Baker) did that great scene behind the newsdesk!!  DB asks Sara what the team is working on, Finn (Elisabeth Shue) is working on a DB burned in a fire. Nick  (George Eads) on a B&E.  Anyway each of the team is sent to interview the suspects.  Also Vartaan (Alex carter) turns up after quite an absence cos Brass (Paul Guilfoyle) wasn't in this episode.  DB comments they have a "locked room murder with a million witnesses" but the witnesses wouldn't have seen anything during the blackout either.

Morgan (Elisabeth Harnois) talks to Denny (Lenny Jacobson) who used tools on the set and she gets a little nervous around him.  Greg (Eric Szmanda) talks to the make-up guy/assistant Chad (Jacob Zachar) who also has sharp objects in his bag.  Rainy Days  - not her real name she says (Abigail Klein) the weathergirl is questioned by Finn who is surprised she has a lot of meteorological knowledge.  She has a PhD and student loans to prove it.  She wanted to take over Theresa's role of anchor as did Ella St James (Spencer Grammer).  She was the reporter broadcasting from outside as they were training for the occurrence of a weather condition converging from two fronts.

Sara is called by Gil plenty of times but she hangs up each one without answering.  Including when she's in autopsy.  Doc (Robert David Hall) finds she had cheek implants, was botoxed and the wound at the back of her neck has the presence of a green paste.  The wound was caused by a knife.  Which Hodges (Wallace Langham) analyzes and comes up with chromium used for sharpening blunt objects, such as knives, as he demonstrates to Greg, with the use of a piece of leather.  Nick finds an empty coffee cup outside as the broadcast van is driven up with Ella and Robbie (Richard Blake).  She wants to get an interview with Nick but he's collecting evidence and refuses.  Robbie knows every inch of the studio and where to hook up the van for electricity, well he would wouldn't he.  Rain brings in a recording showing Ella faked the outside broadcast since the weather map shows where she was located was meant to be in darkness, but the video shows the moon behind her. Morgan talks to Denny again and asks if it's possible to tell where someone was located when they were broadcasting and finds Ella wasn't where she said she was.

Ella says she wanted to take over from Theresa but it didn't work out and she as removed as co-anchor.  She and Robbie admit to having an affair and so were at a motel together.  Also Theresa was very secretive and was working on something since she used to take her bag everywhere with her.  DB and Sara check out her house and Sara describes it as being a bit like her's.  Not very lived in.  Until she gets to the kitchen area where she finds lots of clippings and paper stuck on the walls and windows.  DB finds a notebook in shorthand, DB knows as the outmoded Gregg system and Sara notices the wineglasses.  Which Henry (Jon Wellner) analyzes.

The clippings relate to an arsonist who killed people by his fires and is a cold case Theresa was working on.  The arsonist was never found.  DB decides to find out what happened to the power source and finds an exploded transformer which was destroyed by a fire.  As well as the pieces of a mobile phone and dynamite packaging.  Sara works on putting together the phone as there may be prints on it and DB puts together the label for a manufacturer's serial number.  The fire was triggered by a signal from the phone which took time and as DB says "patience."

Sara decodes the shorthand and Finn helps out, she's got nothing else to do and sees Sara still isn't answering her phone, as she brings up NTSB guy from last ep.  Sara telling her nothing happened between them but she doesn't want to pick up cos Gil wants to talk and she's afraid of what he might say.  This leads them to Finn's DB who was a military man and the only other one at the station with such connections was Denny.  Whilst DB watches the news Sara says she doesn't want to talk about her personal life and notices Rain's dress.  There's a part missing in front of the screen since it's got green on it.  When DB, Vartaan and Morgan arrive at the station, Denny runs away and takes his knife with him.  Morgan gives chase and he runs into the press outside.  He loved Theresa and doesn't want to go back to prison so he kills himself.  Knew that was coming.

Henry matches the DNA on the glass to Denny who was having an affair with Theresa and in the flashback it appeared she was using him to get info out of him.  Thus she made the connection between who the arsonist was.  That wasn't difficult since he was my suspect from the outset.  I know I should stop doing that when watching, but that's what makes it fun.  DB takes them back to the station as they re-enact the murder at the CS.  Sara is the Vic and he gives her a yellow flag which the killer must remove.  Morgan is Denny, Finn is in Rain's position and Greg is in Chad's place, as he gets the coffee cup and goes to deposit a sample in it.  EEww, never consume anything you don't get yourself!  DB is in the studio with Vartaan, who counts them down when the lights are off.  None of them reach her in time, except Sara finds the flag is missing.  That's cos DB took it and Vartaan didn't even realize he was gone.

Fred (Daniel Roebuck) killed her cos she found out he was the arsonist, he was reporting that story so was first on the scene.  Also the military man knew that too which is why Fred killed him and set up Denny for Theresa's murder.  He wouldn't have killed her cos he loved her.  Fred claims self defence but Sara tells him he left a partial on the transformer which matched his index finger.  DB "Oops."

Sara answers Gil's call and he asks if now is a good time to talk...wonder what that was about then.  They can't really be breaking up after it took them so long to get together, yeah when he decided to leave.  We got to hear Gil's (William Petersen) voice this episode which isn't quite the same as watching him on screen.
